Home to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Turkey's agricultural sector today reflects the wealth of ancient Mesopotamia. Turkey is recognized as one of the leading countries in the world in the field of agriculture and food, with its favorable geographical conditions and climate, vast farmland and abundance of water resources.
Turkey has a strong agriculture and food industry that employs about 20% of the working population in the country in 2018 and accounts for 5.8% of the country's GDP. The financial contribution of the sector to GDP was USD 42.5 billion in 2018.
Among the features that make the sector strong are the country's young population, market size, dynamic economy, strong tourism income and favorable climatic conditions.
Turkey is the world's 7th largest agricultural producer and the world leader in the production of dried figs, hazelnuts, raisins and dried apricots. The country is also among the world's leading honey producers. Turkey produced 22.1 million tons of milk in 2018, making it the leader in its region in milk and dairy production. The country produced 34.4 million tons of cereals, 30 million tons of vegetables, 22.2 million tons of fruit, 2.1 million tons of white meat and 1.1 million tons of red meat in the same year. In addition, while the total number of plant species in Europe is 11,500, it is estimated that Turkey is home to a total of 11,000 plant species.
This production volume ensures that Turkey, as one of the largest exporters of agricultural products in the Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EMENA) region, by far maintains its positive trade balance. Globally, Turkey exported 1,800 types of agricultural products to more than 190 countries in 2018, achieving an export revenue of US $ 17.7 billion.
Turkey offers significant investment opportunities in subsectors of the agricultural industry, such as fruit and vegetable processing, animal feed, livestock, poultry, dairy, functional food, aquaculture and support products (especially cold chain distribution, greenhouse cultivation, irrigation and fertilization).
Turkey aims to position itself as a preferred choice for a regional base and supply center with the leading global players in the agricultural sector. It offers a range of incentives to potential agriculture and food investors to encourage investments in the industry.
